The demand for safe secure and compassionate spaces has intensified in recent years as social policy has developed to create a safety culture within mental health care. This was emphasised within the national suicide prevention strategy for England (DoH, 2002) which first introduced the standard that likely ligature anchor points in mental health inpatient environments should be removed or covered. Since this time the manufacture of innovative ligature resistant safety products has kept pace providing care providers with a large choice of safety products available.
Once ligature resistant equipment has been fitted it is essential that it is maintained. Moreover, we believe that environmental safety goes beyond the fitting of products but also encompasses the design and fit of each room and the furniture fixtures and fittings within it taking into consideration the individuals being cared for.
Here at Lig-Safe we have a dynamic team of clinical experts drawn from the NHS with specialist engineers working to create safe environments within mental health care environments.
