⚡ Our mission
Current drive-train solutions for bottom-fixed offshore wind turbines struggle to meet the demands of floating wind energy, particularly as turbine sizes scale beyond 15 MW. With increasing nacelle weights, high repair costs, and the need for cost-effective floating platforms, innovation is critical to enable technical and economic feasibility.
LIGHTWIND is developing a disruptive, compact, and lightweight drive-train solution designed to:
Reduce nacelle and rotor mass, easing platform demands.
Lower turbine and repair costs, ensuring economic viability.
Enable scalability to 22 MW and 30 MW turbines.
Minimize the use of critical materials and maximize environmental sustainability.
📈 What we aim to achieve
The project will demonstrate the technical feasibility of this innovative drive-train concept and evaluate its economic, social, and environmental benefits compared to 15 MW reference turbines. By addressing the weight and cost challenges, LIGHTWIND is unlocking the potential for larger, more efficient floating wind turbines, making remote offshore wind sites an economically viable solution for clean energy production.
