Line2Line Coatings is an automotive supplier of coatings for powertrain components such as impellers, gears, supercharger components, pistons and turbo housings. We make Additive Abradable Powder Coatings™, also known as AAPC™, which function to reduce clearances and optimize oil films in pumps and compressor devices. This technology was developed for the automotive industry, and has been used on millions of vehicles since 2000. Now it is available to you. The coatings allow devices to be assembled very tightly. During initial operation the coating undergoes a controlled wear event, until it has ‘honed’ itself to the ideal fit against mating parts. When there is sufficient gap for an ideal oil film to exist, boundary lubrication is prevented, and the wear STOPS---the geometry of the part is thereby optimized long term. On I.C.E. (Internal Combustion Engine) pistons, we routinely observe improvements in power and durability in the race field. On piston skirts, AAPC does the following: 1. Reduces clearances (especially away from the gage point) to reduce slap, ring rock, and improve sealing. 2. Reduces friction by improving oil film as governed by the Stribeck oil film relationship. We are also in development on OEM pistons, with a more favorable friction coefficient and over 2X better scuff resistance when compared to the benchmark production coating.
