This laboratory is located in the computer science department of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM). It is directed by Joël Lefebvre, a professor in the computer science department since January 2020. The research carried out by this laboratory concerns the development of computer vision techniques and image analysis algorithms for microscopy and neurophotonics. The goal of LINUM is to better understand the organization of the brain by exploiting optical imaging modalities and advanced methods in data analysis.
The main research projects of this laboratory focus on neurophotonics and the analysis of biomedical images. In particular, we use several imaging modalities (serial histology, optical coherence microscopy, 2-photon microscopy, diffusion MRI, etc.) to image whole ex vivo mouse brains. The goal is to better understand the organization of white matter fiber crossings in order to improve the performance of tractography algorithms used in clinics with diffusion MRI data. In addition, these research projects aim to combine microscopy and artificial intelligence to assist microscope users and facilitate the discovery of information for biomedical research and diagnostics. This line of research is called augmented microscopy
