Lions are men and women who perform humanitarian service in their spare time. Founded in 1917 in Oakbrook, Chicago, the organization is the world's largest volunteer organization and acts according to the principle: "We serve". As part of a global network (more than 1.4 million members in over 200 countries), Lions members cultivate both national and international friendships and contacts - also in joint projects. These activities - whether local, national or international - strengthen the inner cohesion of the clubs and express the basic idea of Lionism. In addition, the Lions support young people as part of their "Youth Programs", are committed to environmental protection and support regional and national projects as well as disaster victims around the world through their foundation. The first Lions Club in Switzerland was founded after the Second World War on May 5, 1948 in Geneva (LC Genève). On October 9, 1948, the LC Zurich was founded as the oldest German-speaking Lions Club in the world. This was also the birth of Lionism in the German-speaking world. From Zurich, the spark spread to the neighboring countries of Germany and Austria.
