About Literacy DuPage
Language makes all the difference for people longing to connect and contribute at home, at work, and in our community. Imagine if you couldn’t get a driver’s license, go to the grocery store, talk to your child’s teacher. Literacy DuPage provides free customize English tutoring to help adult learners reach their life skill goals. In DuPage County, 53,162 adults do not have a high school diploma, 87,614 residents speak English “less than well”, and 70,756 live in poverty. Additionally, children of parents with low literacy levels have a 72% chance of achieving only the lowest level of literacy when they become adults, creating a cycle of illiteracy and poverty that can span generations. BECOME A TUTOR You are three steps from a life-changing volunteer opportunity! 1. Attend a 45 minute Meet & Greet session. 2. Complete 15 hours of training (11 hours self-paced and online). 3. Meet 2 hours a week with your learner. No teaching or foreign language experience needed! Register for a Meet and Greet at https://www.literacydupage.org/volunteer. "My student and I were teachers as our profession. She is the second woman I have tutored through Literacy DuPage. I love tutoring women because they’re usually the last person in the family to learn English, as men need it for work and children learn at school. It’s been a joy to watch her learn and practice in different areas of her life, such as talking with her children’s teachers, at medical appointments, and with friends.” Literacy DuPage Tutor DONATE Your donation will support program development and expansion, tutor training and resources, and learner services. When communities work to improve low literacy, it leads to: • Increased individual and family income. • Lower unemployment. • Improved health conditions. • Decreased incarceration rates. • Reduced public assistance need.
