London Heritage Volunteering Group Overview

LHVMN has been established to promote peer support and awareness of best practice in volunteer management amongst the managers of heritage sector volunteer programmes within the London region. To this end the LHVMN will aim to meet quarterly at a range of participating members’ venues within the London Area. Membership of the network is open to any person responsible for the management and development of volunteering within a museum or heritage sector organisation/property within the London and Greater London Region. Membership of the LHVMN does not extend to organisations from the wider arts sector including art galleries, although at selected network meetings it may be appropriate to invite representatives from heritage organisations outside of London or the wider volunteer management sector to attend as speakers or presenters on key themes. The key consideration in respect to membership is the level of heritage that any potential member organisation is actually involved with. If for example it is simply a converted church building that has become a local community centre hosting a range of different arts & cultural events then this organisation would not be eligible to join LHVMN. If it has permanent and significant exhibitions on the history of the building and associated research functions then it is a heritage site - and therefore eligible to join. Preserving heritage should be the primary focus of any organisation wishing to join the network.
