About Long COVID Project

Long COVID is a 48-month Horizon Europe project aiming to understand the mechanisms of host-virus response behind the long-term symptoms following COVID-19 infection. The number of patients suffering from long-term effects of a COVID-19 infection are growing worldwide. Based on different statistics, 1 in 10 patients is developing Long Covid Syndrome (LCS). Currently, there is no validated information on the underlying mechanism for LCS and validated therapeutic interventions are not available. It is therefore important to identify and understand the mechanisms behind the continuing symptoms and to use this improved understanding to provide adequate treatment to patients. This is what the Long COVID project aims to do. The project, coordinated by HUS Helsinki University Hospital (Finland) and including 12 partners from 6 countries (Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Estonia and Switzerland), will study the pathogenesis of LCS by: - conducting geographically diverse cohort and registry studies; - conducting mechanistic studies; - using novel high-throughput methods for biomarker analysis; - conducting interventional and follow-up studies on LCS patients.
