Named after Prof. Yuan Longping, the “Father of Hybrid Rice”, Yuan Longping High-Tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. was founded in China in 1999 by Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center, and Academician Prof. Yuan Longping, who also serves as its honorary chairman. Longping High-Tech has more than 20 subsidiaries and branches. The company keeps hybrid rice as the core business holding the largest market share of hybrid rice seeds in the world. It also plays a leading role in other fields such as hybrid pepper, hybrid maize, hybrid cotton, and rape seeds. In the Philippines, LongPing Tropical Rice Development, Inc. has 12 hybrid rice varieties registered with the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC), with each variety having distinct agronomic characteristics. Interestingly, LP 534, LP 937, LP 205, and LP 2096 being sold in the market today have short plant height making them less prone to lodging.
