LORESA is an NLC Healthcare Venture est. 2023 based in the Netherlands. We focus on emerging markets to bring low-cost, low-resource surgical aids to improve surgical care in LMICs. Our first product Retractor for Abdominal Insufflation-less Surgery (RAIS) was developed by a collaborative multidisciplinary team of surgeons and engineers in the UK and India as an alternative to the existing CO2 use for abdominal visualization during laparoscopy. RAIS has been closely designed and evaluated with surgical experts working in low-resource areas. We have developed a relatively inexpensive retractor that may be undertaken with spinal anesthesia and using modified reusable open surgical instruments through flexible gel ports. This technique has allowed us to bring the benefits of laparoscopic surgery to rural areas, where conventional laparoscopy is neither feasible nor affordable. RAIS works by mechanically lifting the abdominal wall, creating a space in the abdominal cavity to conduct laparoscopic surgery. The technique, called GILLS (Gas Insufflation-Less Laparoscopic Surgery) removes the need for general anesthetic, CO2 gas, and expensive instrumentation which are inaccessible to rural healthcare facilities. It also brings advantages of laparoscopic surgery - Shorter hospital stay - Faster recovery time - Ability to visualize the abdominal organs without open surgery - Fewer complications, especially surgical site infections. - Less scarring
