THE LUA STORY
How It All Began
While there may be have been attempts back in the 1960’s to organize an association of underwriters, it was only in October 1983, that the efforts to form the Association gained momentum.
Armed with their vast experience and driven by unwavering enthusiasm, Mrs. Avelina G. De Jesus, from Insular Life Assurance Co., Ltd., Mr. Orlando G. Javier, then with B.F. Lifeman Insurance and the late Mr. Gonzalo B. Cruz, then with Manila Bankers Life Insurance, prepared what would be a “recipe” for life insurance underwriters hungry for training, education and professional development. Mrs. De Jesus was the only MDRT members from the Philippines at that time.
De Jesus, Javier and Cruz sent out invitations to distinguished names in the industry on the basis of business conduct, productivity and moral character. Those who responded to the call were composed of ten founding members namely: Ms. Avelina G. De Jesus, Mr. Orlando G. Javier, the late Mr. Gonzalo B. Cruz, Mr. Gregorio V. Tongko, Mr. Antonio G. Ignacio, Ms. Lulu M. Del Mundo, Mr. Cesar R. Reyes, Mr. Ricardo C. Aguila, Ms. Tedia M. Camarillo and Ms. Purificacion Lozare. After consultations with representatives of various insurance companies and the morale boost coming from the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), LUA-Philippines was formally organized in February 1984.
