Ludus Baroque

Ludus Baroque is a baroque chamber orchestra founded in 1997 by Richard Neville-Towle and based at the elegant Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Here Ludus has established a platform for the performance of Bach’s great choral works with an annual performance of Bach’s sublime B Minor Mass to celebrate the opening night of the Edinburgh Festival and the festive Christmas Oratorio to celebrate the birth of Christ. We are fortunate in having enjoyed several years of working with violinist Oliver Webber, whose interest and knowledge in the tension and stringing of the violins, violas, cellos and basses has brought a fresh approach to the contrapuntal dynamic of the music we play, and whose inspiring leadership has brought these techniques alive. To match these splendidly gutsy gut strings we have developed a fine band of colourful woodwind, soaring brass and tightly honed timpani.
