Maati Mange More (3M): A Community-Driven Campaign for Living Soils Background: Soil degradation is a major crisis in developing and poor farming regions, where conventional, chemical-intensive agriculture has depleted soil organic carbon and biodiversity. Traditional lab-based soil testing is impractical for most smallholders due to lack of access and affordability. Recognizing this gap, Natural Capital initiated "Maati Mange More (3M)" – a participatory campaign that empowers communities to evaluate and restore soil health without relying on laboratory support. Core Idea: 3M turns soil restoration into a grassroots movement by enabling farmers to observe, assess, and improve soil conditions using a simple, participatory approach. The campaign uses a farmer-friendly soil health scorecard to guide discussions and planning. This scorecard helps communities evaluate soil fertility based on observable indicators: organic content, biodiversity, moisture retention, crop diversity, tillage, and organic inputs. Based on scores, farmers classify their soils into five grades (A to E) and track improvements annually. Low-Cost Regenerative Practices Promoted: • Organic matter content – Is the soil dark, rich in humus and mulch? (Previously measured via lab, but now estimated by soil color/feel or using local kits/pH strips if available.) • Crop diversity and rotation – Do farmers rotate crops or intercrop to replenish nutrients? • Soil cover and biodiversity – Are fields kept covered with cover crops or mulch? Are there trees or hedgerows protecting the soil? • Living roots & residues – Are there living roots in the soil year-round and crop residues left to decompose? • Soil disturbance – Is tillage minimal or excessive? (Less disturbance preserves structure) • Use of organic inputs – Have farmers applied farmyard manure or compost in recent seasons? • Soil moisture – Does the plot retain moisture well (e.g. does soil stay damp a few days after rain)?
