The firm was established in 1967 by Norman MacLachlan who had previously qualified as a Chartered Patent Agent and as a Trade Mark Agent, and in 2017 celebrated its 50th anniversary. By providing an efficient, cost-effective service, MacLachlan & Donaldson expanded rapidly during the 1970s, largely on the basis of personal recommendations. The growth of the firm has continued to the present day and there are currently 6 directors and 16 other employees, including an office in Belfast which operates under the name Ansons. The firm's patent department handles the drafting, filing and prosecution of both national and worldwide patent applications, including applications before the European Patent Office. It also advises on all aspects of patent validity and infringement. The firm's Patent Attorneys are experienced in a broad range of disciplines. MacLachlan & Donaldson's trade mark department not only handles the registration and protection of trade marks in Ireland but also specialises in the filing and prosecution of applications at the European Union Intellectual Property Office and throughout the world. It also advises clients on the adoption, correct usage and protection of trade marks.
