About Maggies

Maggies is the oldest women's organization on campus. Established in 1999 by a group of young women who aimed to forge lasting bonds of friendship, Maggies has become a unique place for women from all walks of life to gather and grow alongside one another. Maggies is a name reclaimed. In 1963, when women and people of color were first admitted to Texas A&M University, a historically all white male institution, female students were called Maggies. This term diminished women to second class students, implying that they weren’t real Aggies. In 1999, our founders chose this name to “honor the pioneering women who paved the way for future female students.” By creating a space that celebrates and supports women regardless of if they are members of this organization, the word Maggie now signifies empowerment. Since the beginning, Maggies have cared deeply about inclusivity. We believe that immersing oneself in a group of passionate, diverse women is a catalyst for transformation. As Maya Angelou said, "In diversity, there is beauty and there is strength." To become a Maggie is to become a sister, a leader and a catalyst for positive change. Maggies is our bond. It is where we are encouraged and challenged. Maggies is our home.
