So often you will read about a winery or vineyard owner’s passion after taking over where a beloved family member, often grandfather has left-off. It is far less common to hear the “first generation” story. There are several reasons for the but suffice it to say it’s more uncommon because of the incredible upfront costs & when your first bottle of wine won’t be produced for over 5 years.
Mahan Family Wines is a Midwest vineyard & winery. Our vineyard is in southwest Michigan & our winery is in Bloomingdale, IL. Our story nods to one’s future retirement-years, “give it everything you’ve got” while still working a demanding career.
Winemaker Phil Mahan was uncertain that he was on the right track to enjoy his golden years of retirement. He was certain he didn’t want to retire to Florida & work on his golf game. Celebrating his 55th birthday, they took a trip.
Traveling through the wine-country of Austria, we were inspired to dust off a dream they had parked while in our 40’s. They previously were unable to consider realizing it because of the demands of careers & family.
