Designed to rival Western sonar systems and propulsion algorithms, MDS operated from undisclosed research vessels and deep-water bases in the Barents Sea, developing black-box code for nuclear submarines and deep reconnaissance missions.
After the dissolution of the USSR, a small core of engineers, intelligence-linked mathematicians, and underwater acoustic specialists restructured the unit as a private international maritime systems firm, relocating its headquarters to Majuro, Marshall Islands.
