Makarov Deep Systems

Makarov Deep Systems was originally established in 1974 as a covert naval technologies bureau under the auspices of the Soviet Ministry of Shipbuilding Industry. Designed to rival Western sonar systems and propulsion algorithms, MDS operated from undisclosed research vessels and deep-water bases in the Barents Sea, developing black-box code for nuclear submarines and deep reconnaissance missions. After the dissolution of the USSR, a small core of engineers, intelligence-linked mathematicians, and underwater acoustic specialists restructured the unit as a private international maritime systems firm, relocating its headquarters to Majuro, Marshall Islands.
