My journey in cartography began after completing my university degree in Sciences on the East Coast of Canada. On the advice of a relative who was a Geography Professor at a Canadian University I pursued a post-graduate program in GIS at the Centre of Geographic Sciences in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia. Since then I've been lucky enough to work nearly 15 years in Western Canada for Engineering and Construction firms on some of the largest infrastructure projects worldwide, providing GIS and Remote Sensing expertise. More recently I've become familiar with a new mapping technique that goes beyond traditional hill shading methods common to popular mapping softwares. The process combines all my favorite parts of GIS and map making, being manipulation of DEMs, projections, and now 3d rendering. Above all though, I enjoy that the process takes maps created long before computers (in most cases) and gives them a brand new perspective or even a restoration. I don't want to take credit away from the great cartographers that have created some of these source maps, but I hope I do them the honour of bringing the maps a new life. The first map I created with the technique was the Nova Scotia 1:1M Topographic Map first published by Natural Resource Canada in 1967. When I printed it for the first time I was blown away. I truly hope you have the same reaction when which ever map you choose makes its way to you.
