About Mapbiomas Arida
The MapBiomas - Arida Project is an initiative of the Ministry of the Environment of Brazil and UNDP, funded by the GEF, with the objective of creating a monitoring system for degraded areas in the Brazilian northeast, based on Remote Sensing, as well as monitoring the areas of interventions (URAD - Degraded Area Recovery Units and Reducing Climate Vulnerability in the Brazilian Semi-Arid Region) that aim to mitigate desertification processes. The State University of Feira de Santana - UEFS and the Association of Plants of the Northeast - APNE are responsible for the execution of the Project which has the support of a working group, formed by specialists from several Brazilian institutions invited to the meetings of the Desertification Technical Group. The developed system aims to support managers and the local community so that they can follow the evolution in time of the biophysical processes that trigger the desertification as well as the actions developed in URAD, aiming at Land Degradation Neutrality - LDN, which is one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations - UN.
