About Mapping Belfast Musically

Mapping Belfast Musically’ is a ethnographic project, interactive website and smartphone app, which brings together the music and atmosphere of Belfast by capturing audio and visual material which along side text description aids in databasing the soundscape of Belfast city. The project was founded in 2013, and officially launched in May 2014 at the 'Sound and Space' conference in Queens University Belfast. The mobile application went live in October 2014, and official launch will follow. The project is brain child of Queens University ethnomusicology graduates Aisling Nolan, Kayla Rush and Leilani Hermiasih and was developed during their postgraduate studies at QUB. The trio, who hail from the Republic of Ireland, the United States and Indonesia, sought to fill a void in the presentation of the music of Belfast. A resource for academics who study music, anthropology, borders and politics, the interactive map can be used as a tool for research where music is central. Also a valuable website and app, for music lovers or visitors to Belfast who are interested in experiencing the soundscape at specific places in time. The App is free to download, search Mapping Belfast Musically in the app stores for Apple and Android. Any information or queries can be forwarded to info@mappingbelfastmusically.com or you can fill out the contact form on the website.
