The Institute of Materials Science at the Technical University of Darmstadt develops resource-efficient materials for a sustainable future. The two main focuses of our research are materials for electronics and electrochemistry as well as magnetic materials. Our projects strive for closed material cycles and critical raw materials substitution. The simulation- and data-driven digital material design is a unifying element of all our research activities. 200 researchers work in fifteen in-house divisions and eight associated groups and pass on their first-hand expertise through their teaching activities. We understand sustainability as a necessity for maintaining the way of living and making it accessible to a growing population. For this, we predominantly cover the following research areas: materials characterisation, digital material design, magnetic materials, materials for electronic applications, materials for energy conversion and storage, and circular economy and substitution, with significant intersections across these domains. Our state-of-the-art synthesis, analysis, and simulation equipment sternly support its research activities. It comprises highly integrated ultra-high vacuum synthesis and in-situ analysis systems (DArmstadt Integrated SYstems for SOLar Cell Research: DAISY-SOL, for MATerials Research: DAISY-MAT, for FUNdamental Research: DAISY-FUN, for BATtery Research: DAISY-BAT), or the TU Darmstadt computing centre Lichtenberg II for modelling and simulation. Our students gain early access to our facilities. We train experts through coordinated bachelor’s and international master’s programmes, as well as PhD projects.
