MCPI Private Limited (MCPI) is an Indian manufacturer of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), headquartered in Kolkata and has its production unit in the industrial town of Haldia in West Bengal. It is the second largest PTA producer in the country, having an installed capacity of 1.27 Million MT per annum of PTA. Endowed with proprietary Japanese technology, it has been providing best-in-class PTA to downstream Polyester industries- i.e., Polyester Fibre, PET, and PET Film for two decades.
MCPI was set up as a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC), Japan in 1997 and continued to remain so till its acquisition by The Chatterjee Group (TCG), led by Dr. Purnendu Chatterjee in 2016. TCG has an enviable track record as a strategic investor with business in many sectors. The Group specializes in Petrochemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Biotech, Financial Services, Real Estate and Technology sectors in the US, Europe, and South Asia.
MCPI began commercial production in April 2000. The first phase of commercial production commenced with an annual capacity of 350,000 tonnes – which was enhanced to 470,000 tonnes per annum in December 2003. The second phase of the plant commenced commercial production in March 2010, having a capacity of producing 800,000 tonnes of PTA per annum.
With an aim to become a significant player in the Polyester value chain, MCPI acquired Garden Silk Mills Private Limited (GSMPL) in February 2021. GSMPL is one of the prominent polyester manufacturers in the Indian market, having chips, yarn, and fabric making facilities as its main products. The company is well known for its fabric business under the ‘Garden Vareli’ brand.
