Das Netzwerk der MDI-DE besteht zunächst aus der technischen Vernetzung als Dateninfrastruktur, deren zentrale Plattform das MDI-DE-Geoportal bildet. Metadaten, Daten und Dienste für den deutschen Küsten- und Meeresbereich der beteiligten Behörden sind dort recherchierbar. Durch die inhaltliche Zusammenarbeit der MDI-DE-Partner entstehen zudem gemeinsame Dienste, die auf übergeordneten Portalen wie GDI-DE oder INSPIRE auffindbar sind. Diese technische Vernetzung wird durch konsequente Nutzung von nationalen und internationalen Standards erreicht. Zudem werden Prinzipien wie OpenData und FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) umgesetzt.
Inhaltlich werden die unterschiedlichen Fachbereiche Meeresnaturschutz, Meeresumweltschutz, Küstengewässerschutz, Küsteningenieurwesen und Forschung abgedeckt.
