The Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras is as old as the Institute itself. The department has close to 65 faculty members working in various advanced areas of research and development.
Currently, the department offers an undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering and three Master's programs in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Design and Thermal Engineering. The department is engaged in high-quality research in various inter-disciplinary areas through its Master of Science (Research) and Ph.D programs.
