Atlantis

Project Atlantis is an ambitious initiative spearheaded by the Finnish Defence Forces to create a standardized medical common operating picture. This project addresses the unique challenges NATO members face, where no single software can easily fit the needs of such a vast and complex organization without extensive customization and integration. The core challenge is the rigidity of traditional software architectures, where the user interface, business logic, and data are tightly coupled. This structure results in inefficiency and difficulty when trying to implement new software or integrate systems across NATO’s many member states. The goal of Project Atlantis is to decouple these components, creating a modular system that allows each element to evolve independently. A significant aspect of the solution is data standardization. By separating the data layer from the software, NATO can maintain a longer lifecycle for its information, irrespective of changes in software systems. This also opens the door for interoperability among NATO members and trusted partners via the NATO Data Mesh and Federated Mission Networking (FMN). These solutions ensure that critical medical data can be shared on the battlefield and with broader communities of interest, enhancing collaboration and coordination. Project Atlantis aims to design a framework that is adaptable to various medical scenarios—from force health protection to special operations forces' missions, emergency medical services, and large-scale operations. The project will integrate with existing national electronic health records (EHRs), offering support for smoother data exchange. Early-stage prototypes will be tested in real-world environments by leveraging exercises like CWIX and Bold Quest. The project’s journey is just beginning, but the path forward promises to enhance NATO’s medical capabilities, creating an adaptable, long-lasting ecosystem that supports both military and civilian medical services.
