Mediumroast was founded in 2020 with the goal of helping Product, Business Development, Customer Success, and other similar teams overcome the challenges of surfacing the "why's" behind their planning and translating them into actionable steps. Our story begins in the early 2000s, a time when modern Product Discovery practices were in their infancy. One of the biggest obstacles we faced was a language barrier between Product and Engineering, as well as mutual skepticism between the two groups. Answering the age-old question "Did a customer really ask for this?" was a daunting task. To overcome this, we took our Engineers on the road to visit users and partners, discussing and debating our findings along the way while also considering the competition. This led to a shared understanding of why and what to build, resulting in thrilled users, significant business growth, and a competitive edge.
As we reflected on this experience, we realized that our company's competitive advantage was exceedingly rare in today's landscape. This prompted us to explore how we could make this advantage more common. We came to the realization that we could encode our experiences into software and complement it with services to help teams plan better, with a clear understanding of the "why" behind their decisions.
