One major contributor to this inefficiency is the occurrence of last-minute cancellations of elective surgeries due to unforeseen demand for emergency care, which leads to wasted resources, reduced prognosis for patients, dissatisfaction among patients, and financial penalties for hospitals. To address this issue, MedPredict has developed a machine learning solution that forecasts future demand for emergency surgeries in a more nuanced and accurate manner than the current constant assumption model. Our state-of-the-art Bayesian-based system demonstrates a significant improvement over the current approach and has the potential to greatly enhance the efficiency of theatre space booking. By utilizing a data-informed, flexible allocation system, we can optimize the use of theatre space and ultimately improve patient outcomes while also reducing costs for the NHS.
