"Decolonizing psychology creates possibilities for social change"
Our project aims to decolonise the approach to mental health care and psychosocial development. To decolonize means to challenge the history of the field, and the existing norms and practices, and to reimagine our approach towards mental healthcare.
The ‘one size fits all’ approach to mental health fails to account for the lived experiences of BIPOC and communities that are marginalized and/or face oppression in various contexts. This approach to mental health has standardized all issues and concerns, and now, those interventions are made at the individual level. It silently blames the individual for not being able to assimilate and make the most of the under-serving systems.
People and their minds are influenced by their social, economic, and political conditions. We do not exist in isolation from society, and hence, we cannot isolate and standardize interventions to be fit for everyone in the same manner.
