In 1947 it was determined that the pre sea training of marine engineers be shifted ashore under the name of Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET). DMET Mumbai began its operations on August 10, 1949 in temporary facilities in Boribunder and finally moved to its current location on December 14,1953. In 1975, DMET Mumbai began offering the Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Engineering (PGDME) course for the purpose of training graduate mechanical engineers to become Marine Engineers. In 1995 DMET was renamed to Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) and in 2003 MERI Mumbai began offering a dual degree course in Maritime Training known as the BMS course. Today MERI Mumbai offers two courses, B. Tech in Marine Engineering for high school graduates and the PGDME course for mechanical engineering graduates. In order to ensure the best training possible to its cadets, MERI Mumbai boasts of state of the art laboratories such as the Seamanship Lab, Engine Room Simulator, Mechanical Lab, Hydraulic Lab, Electrical Lab, Control Lab, Boiler Lab, and the Computer Lab. There is an In-House Workshop with a 4-Stroke Kirloskar Engine, DAHITSU Engine, HFO Purifier, Oily Water Separator, Steering Gear, Boiler, Gas Turbine, Alternator, High Expansion Foam Generator, Lathe, Drilling, Universal Testing Machines and all those machineries required for training. The library has a collection of 15,000 documents consisting of books and manuals, ship drawings, articles, project reports, standards, reports, national and international periodicals, bound volumes, CD ROMs and equipment catalogues. For Sports Activities there is a Basketball Court, a Football Field, a Cricket Ground, a Volleyball Court and a Swimming Pool and other Indoor Games Facilities. In conclusion, it is not an exaggeration to say that MERI-Mumbai is one of the most prestigious Maritime Institutes of our country, boasting an illustrious past and looking towards a glorious future.
