Established by the Cochise County Board of Supervisors January 13, 2009, taking over the area previously served by the Mescal-J6 Volunteer Fire Department since 1981. A combination department, consisting of both career and volunteer firefighters proudly serving the communities of Mescal, J-6, Empire and Salcido Acres along with the Skyline Titan Road and Dark Star areas.
The district consists of approximately 21 miles spanning both Cochise and Pima counties serving about 1,700 residents, 11 miles of Interstate 10, 13 miles of Union Pacific Railroad and two high pressure gas pipelines with a large wildland urban interface.
Mescal-J6 Fire is governed by a five-person, non-partisan board elected at large by the voters of the district. The Board establishes policy, sets tax rates, approves the budget, and hires the Fire Chief.
