About MESCH
The MESCH (Modular Energy Storage with Clean Hydrogen) project is funded by Innovate UK (UKRI) and began in May 2024 with a duration of 24 months. Our vision is to provide inclusive access to a sustainable energy source. The project focuses on developing a new form of battery and hydrogen production technology called the battery-electrolyser, which is part of a modularised hybrid energy storage system. The battery-electrolyser can store electrical power and produce hydrogen using electrolysis. This cutting-edge technology results in a low-carbon footprint, provision of electricity buffering and multi-vector energy storage, and reliable 24-hour access to electricity and clean fuel using low-cost components. Our international project team includes UK-based partners Consortium for Battery Innovation (project coordination), Ultima Forma (hydrogen storage provider) and Loughborough University (technical development), Malawi-based partners Renew’N’able (community engagement) and INFLO (commissioning, operation, training) and Bulgaria-based partner MONBAT (major battery manufacturer and energy storage player).
