The 15th 8000m high mountain of Reinhold Messner is the sum of all his experiences. He dedicated the mountains and the mountain culture to a unique project, a network of museums located in six extraordinary places in South Tyrol and Belluno. The Messner Mountain Museum is a place of encounter with the mountains, with mountain people and ultimately with ourselves.
The enchanted mountain: As the centerpiece, MMM Firmian in Sigmundskron Castle near Bozen addresses the subject of man’s encounter with the mountains. Here you can find various works of art, installations, and relics.
Traditional alpinism: MMM Corones, situated on the summit plateau of Kronplatz and created by Zaha Hadid, is dedicated to traditional mountaineering, which has and has been strongly influenced by Reinhold Messner. The museum is devoted to mountain history and offers unique views of the great mountain walls of the Dolomites and the Alps.
The heritage of the Mountain: MMM Ripa represents mountain peoples from Asia, Africa, South America and Europe, and reflects on their cultures, religions and tourism activities. It is about the heritage of the mountains, which has ensured survival over the millennia for the people living high up on the brink of life.
Myth of mountain: The MMM Juval in Vinschgau is dedicated to the Magic of the mountain and houses several fine art collections: a Tibetica collection, a gallery of paintings of the world’s holy mountains, a collection of masks from five continents and many more.
At the end of the world: The museum in Sulden am Ortler is devoted to the world of ice. At MMM Ortles Reinhold Messner tells of the Terrors of Ice and Darkness, Snow People and much more.
The museum in the clouds: The MMM Dolomites is located on Monte Rite in the heart of the Dolomites. The theme in the old fort is “rock”. The museum illustrates the process of the conquest of the Dolomites – with reference to those natural scientists and mountaineers who wrote alpine history.
