The metallonic name derives from the three words mechanical and electronic, and is a new, multidisciplinary way of designing and creating a product that combines the principles of electrical engineering, mechanics, computers, materials, chemistry and industry. Mechatronics systems typically consist of traditional mechanical and electrical components, but are also referred to as intelligent systems because of the use of sensors, actuators, and computer control systems. نام متالونیک از سه کلمه ی م مکانیک و الکترونیک ریشه می گیرد و روشی چند رشته ای و جدید برای طراحی و ایجاد محصولی است که مبانی رشته های مهندسی برق، مکانیک، کامپیوتر، مواد، شیمی و صنایع را با هم در می آمیزد. سیستم های مکاترونیکی نوعا از اجزا سنتی مکانیک و الکتریک تشکیل شده اند ولی به دلیل بکارگیری حسگرها، عملگرها و سیستم های کنترل کامپیوتری از آن ها به عنوان سیستم های هوشمند نیز یاد می شود.
