About MFC CDT

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Mathematics for our Future Climate: Theory, Data and Simulation (MFC CDT) is a dynamic, interdisciplinary PhD programme that leverages the power of mathematics to tackle the pressing issues of climate change. Jointly run by Imperial College London, the University of Reading, and the University of Southampton, MFC CDT collaborates with partners across business, industry, charities, and government. Our mission is to train 90 highly skilled mathematicians to become future leaders in innovative research. They will develop cutting-edge environmental prediction technologies, interpret vast datasets related to the Earth system, and model risks associated with extreme weather and climate change. Graduates will translate their research into practical applications in the public and industrial sectors, focusing on risk and uncertainty quantification for weather, oceans, and climate. MFC CDT offers a comprehensive PhD training programme that includes foundational courses, advanced electives, professional development, and extensive cohort-building activities. Students also benefit from internships, work placements, and outreach opportunities, ensuring they are well-equipped to make significant contributions to addressing climate challenges. Key Focus Areas: Fundamental mathematical advances to understand and anticipate the climate crisis. Methods to exploit large-scale computing and big data. Solutions to tackle climate change, enhance sustainability and economic prosperity. Tools for transparent, accessible, and scalable real-time data analysis.
