Striving to conceive and bring a child into this world is probably one of the most fundamental aspirations people have. Couples with male factor infertility problems represent 30-40% of the infertile population. Azoospermia (absence of spermatozoa in the ejaculate) and Virtual/Crypto Azoospermia (semen with a very low concentration of spermatozoa) account for 20% of all male factor cases. Despite these fertility challenges, sperm can be collected and preserved with appropriate procedures and technology. The SpermVD, is an innovative and efficient medical device developed by MFC Global, for cryopreservation of small numbers of spermatozoa. The SpermVD allows quick and convenient vitrification of spermatozoa (or even a single cell). The thawing process is equally simple, as the small size of the droplets allows quick retrieval of the sperm, which may be used immediately for ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection). The SpermVD enables uncoupling of sperm retrieval from ovum pick-up, minimizing the need for oocyte freezing and for emergency testicular biopsy on OPU (Ovum Pick Up) day.
