In Aotearoa where we have a small and dispersed population traditional trains come with huge costs and struggle to fill their carriages, whereas individual railcars are responsive to scattered demand.
National passenger rail all but disappeared over 20 years ago because it was too slow. It took almost twice as long as either driving or flying.
But this doesn’t have to be the case. Our new design takes its inspiration from bullet trains and aeroplanes, so it hugs the track for higher speeds than have previously been possible on our tracks. And with over 3,500 kms of track, we have a lot of great journeys to bring back.
We have 150 towns on the train lines. the potential to connect millions of people faster is massive.

And we get all this high speed travel with 97% fewer emissions than driving or flying.
With the infrastructure that already exists and the leaps we’ve made over the last decade with battery electric technology, fast electric railcars are our secret weapon in fighting the climate crisis.
