Manufacturing and Industrial Systems Engineering Group

The Manufacturing and Industrial Systems Group is a new group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Melbourne, based on the Parkville Campus. In 2021, the Group launched the first graduate Master of Industrial Engineering degree in Australia. The course, designed to offer future industrial engineers the comprehensive knowledge and tools to design and produce, and to understand how to operate and manage, consists of a mix of traditional and new subjects covering digital manufacturing, data analysis, sustainable engineering and life cycle approaches, complemented by business subjects. Theoretical learning is reinforced with hands on practice through a structure of knowledge development, hands on experience and industrial grounding. The Group is helping to transform and create competitive advantages for the manufacturing and process industries by accelerating digital innovation and by using holistic integrated approaches across the industrial ecosystem. The Group encourages a learning environment that engages a diverse student cohort and has a key focus on research collaborations that elevate the Australian manufacturing industry, multi-disciplinary collaborations across institutions, and industry engagement that steers teaching and further education programs and identifies areas for collaborative research projects.
