Almost every day, people drown as they make their escape across the Mediterranean Sea. Although these people have a right to protection and a right to have their claim at least reviewed, the European Union blocks their way. All means are used to keep people from being able to escape - even at the price of human lives. This is inhumane, and we cannot accept it! Rescuing people in distress at sea is not only a humanitarian imperative. It is a duty that is anchored in the International Law of the Sea. The EU has departed from this consensus with its inhumane policy - and has built a border in the Mediterranean. border in the Mediterranean, where thousands have lost their lives. In order to rescue people in distress at sea we founded MISSION LIFELINE in 2016 and have since saved more than one thousand people from drowning, with our ship LIFELINE. In summer of 2018, the LIFELINE was detained by the Maltese authorities and its captain was put on trial. But we are not giving up. We are still cooperating with other aid and rescue organizations, and even without our ship, we have managed to set up further rescue missions - using all the means at our disposal. As long as people are fleeing across the Mediterranean Sea, we will do everything we can to save their lives.
