Mitotyping Technologies specializes in the analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) for forensic and anthropological applications.
In forensic cases, oftentimes there is insufficient biological material for nuclear DNA typing. In such cases, mtDNA sequence analysis can provide valuable information, even from limited samples such as 2-mm hair fragments or single teeth. Because of its usefulness when limited biological material is available, and due to its maternal inheritance pattern, mtDNA plays a significant role in the investigation and legal proceedings of active criminal cases, as well as post-conviction exoneration, re-examination of cold cases, genealogical studies of maternal lineage, and missing persons investigations.
Mitotyping Technologies has extensive experience with the most difficult samples encountered in DNA testing, such as naturally shed hairs with telogen roots, hair shafts, and aged or burned skeletal material. We offer an "ancient DNA" approach for the most challenging, highly degraded samples. We process each sample individually from start to finish, customizing our approach for each sample and maximizing the probability of obtaining useful information from minimal or highly degraded samples. Unlike high-volume laboratories, we never batch samples, preventing cross-contamination and sample switching.
