Leaving foster care is a stressful time that can feel jarring and strange to young adults who have lived most of their teen years in foster care. Although they can’t wait to turn 18 and get out of care- while they are in care their basic needs are met. Aging-out or emancipating requires immediate action and decision-making that the young adult may not prepared for. The majority of former foster youth are not ready to make adult decisions, and most have experienced trauma that is unimaginable.
Moab House was founded in December 2020 to provide safe, loving, and productive housing to former foster youth ages 18-21 who have aged-out of the foster care system. Our homes feature a live-in set of house parents who work alongside professional and volunteer mentors to ready our young adults for independent living in the areas of financial planning and management, food planning and management, household planning and management, and relationship building.
Our goal is to prepare former foster youth by expanding and slowing down the age-out process. By slowing this process down, it creates extra time for learning and growth. This process allows young adults to feel fully prepared for independent living and to be a productive member of our community.
