Modern Craftsman

Salt Lake City based, Modern Craftsman is led by Tyler Thomas Blaine in providing high quality interior + exterior design. Tyler spent his childhood admiring the architectural concrete structures his father built. He learned early on that good design was naturally sustainable, since he witnessed the vast waste associated with poor design, from material waste to excess labor. He also learned that structures could only sustain a short lifespan without the proper considerations of ergonomics and geographical conditions in which pieces live. Ultimately, his father also taught him industrial relativity, which translates to quality installations. He was fortunate enough in later years to be mentored by Kent Law, a phenomenal woodworker who studied in Japan. Kent taught him refined craftsmanship, which lends to high-quality work. Through the inspiration of Ken's meticulous craft and the industrial elements of his father’s background, he has found harmony. He’s also trained with other mentors in his field, taking classes such as Flex Form with Cody Carpenter, Fabric Forming with Brandon Gore, Advanced Concrete with Fu-Tung Chang, and various others with Buddy Rhodes and Tommy Cook. Tyler realized at a young age that he couldn’t settle for anything less than a hybrid career that mixed the likes of an architect, builder, scientist, geologist, and furniture maker with just a splash of Sherlock Holmes’ curiosity. He’s thrilled that through his own pursuit of happiness, he’s manifested his childhood dreams in becoming a craftsman.
