2000年に住友商事と米Grainger社の出資により、住商グレンジャー株式会社(現MonotaRO)として大阪で創業しました。2006年に東証マザーズに上場し、2009年に東証一部(2022年現在、東証プライム)へ市場変更しています。
MonotaROは、モノづくりの現場で必要な間接資材（例えば、研磨剤やドリルなどの工具、軍手などの消費財）を主に取り扱うECサイト(monotaro.com)を運営しています。2024年3月時点で、商品点数は2300万点、ご登録ユーザー数は900万件に達し、間接資材を扱うB toB ECサイトとしては日本最大の規模になりました。
2011年からはUS、また韓国、インドネシア、インドでも事業を開始し、積極的にグローバル展開を進めています。
