There are three organizations in Aruba that deal with everything that involves restoration, protection, maintenance and awareness of Aruban monuments: Monuments Council Monuments Office Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba In December 1994 the government of Aruba established the Monuments Council. Shortly thereafter on January 1st, 1996 the Monumentenbureau (monuments department) was established and on June 17, 1996, the Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba (Monuments Fund). All three organizations work directly with the Minister of Culture. The main objective of the Monuments Foundation (SMFA) is to preserve Aruban Monuments. Monuments Fund Aruba achieves its goal by: Purchasing, acquiring, restoring, renting and maintaining protected monuments. Focusing on awareness about monuments, as an essential part of our cultural heritage, through photo contests, media, exhibitions, education, etc. Giving advice to monuments owners SMFA receives no subsidy from the government.. Each new project must meet certain conditions before it can start: Financing Protection Property Rental agreement A lease must be signed for each project. The rental income should cover the following costs: Financing Maintenance Insurance Tax and leasehold Overhead
