MoodyTunes is based on more than 10 years of research at Western Sydney University in collaboration with industry partners. The project began by working with hundreds of young people to find out what music listening strategies worked best when they were experiencing depression, low mood or anxiety. This was followed by a formal co-design process with young people, people with lived experience, researchers and mental health professionals which resulted in the creation of the app MoodyTunes.
