في ضوء قرار السيد رئيس الجمهورية رقم 127 لسنة 2016 والذي استحدث وزارة قطاع الأعمال العام، وقرار السيد رئيس مجلس الوزراء رقم 873 لسنة 2016 بتنظيم وزارة قطاع الأعمال العام، تتولى الوزارة إدارة استثمارات الدولة المصرية المملوكة لشركات قطاع الأعمال العام التابعة لها والإشراف على تلك الشركات، ومتابعة وتقييم نتائج أعمالها وعرض تقارير دورية على مجلس الوزراء.
وتختص الوزارة في سبيل تحقيق أهدافها برسم السياسة العامة للوزارة في إطار الأهداف المقررة لها ووضع الخطط لتحقيق تلك الأهداف، وذلك بالتنسيق مع أجهزة الدولة المختلفة ومتابعة تنفيذ هذه الخطط وتقييم نتائجها.
كما تقوم الوزارة بتنفيذ كافة الاختصاصات والمسؤوليات المنصوص عليها في قانون شركات قطاع الأعمال العام الصادر بالقانون رقم 203 لسنة 1991 ولائحته التنفيذية بشأن الشركات التابعة لها.
