As with every great recipe, it is the sum of the ingredients -- not the individual elements -- that makes the dish stand out. When the ingredients are combined in exactly the right way, a good dish becomes great. Each design element should serve a practical purpose and a designer must know when an element is simply a garnish rather than a main ingredient. Using an element in the wrong way can actually distract from the intended message.
