The Mount Stuart Trust is a charitable trust founded in 1985 to fulfil the vision of the late John, Marquess of Bute, who believed Mount Stuart, its gardens and collections should be shared with the public.
Thanks to his generous endowment of the Bute Estate, the Trust preserves and opens Mount Stuart House, a spectacular neo-Gothic house on the Isle of Bute, alongside its gardens, woodlands, and internationally significant collections.
Our mission is to conserve and steward the estate for future generations, while promoting access, education and engagement in art, architecture, history and the rural environment. Today, the Trust also supports creative exploration, with a growing programme of contemporary art and cultural events.
In 2025, we celebrate 30 years of Mount Stuart House and Gardens being open to the public. Throughout the year, we’re unveiling special objects and rarely seen spaces from The Bute Collection - offering new insights into our unique heritage, alongside exciting Contemporary Visual Arts and community programmes which, we warmly invite you to join.
