MPAO LAB W.L.L is a business consultancy and fine chemical R&D company headquartered in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Established in 2018, the company’s technology background originates from South Korea, in collaboration with Korean Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT). MPAO LAB W.L.L has developed its own metallocene catalyst technology and a process for making API Group IV metallocene poly alpha olefin (mPAO) lubricants, which currently do not exist in the Middle East.
Its prospective catalyst has several competitive advantages. It is structurally stable and better synthesizes low viscosity low volatile (LVLV) market-driven Group IV lubricants having uniform macromolecular size distribution. These products are compatible with current lubricant formulation technology. The MPAO LAB W.L.L’s catalyst has very strong potential to make more selective grades of Group IV lubricants with energy conservation, less carbon dioxide emissions, and better product stabilization and size distribution.
The collaboration between KFUPM and MPAO LAB W.L.L began in June 2021, and a Letter of Intent (LOI) was signed between both parties on October 28, 2021. The main objective of this LOI is to collaborate for the development of a 100 metric tons/year pilot plant and a potential 100,000 metric tons/year commercial plant project. Currently, the MPAO LAB W.L.L’s team and Continuous Stirred-tank Reactor (CSTR) have been mobilized at KFUPM’s Interdisciplinary Research Center for Refining & Advanced Chemicals (IRCRAC). Batch and continuous reaction trials have been successfully carried out and currently both parties are discussing to build the pilot plant at the Research Institute of KFUPM and this will be designed for multipurpose alpha olefin valorization product development. MPAO also intends to do further research on synthetic lubricant catalyst, product, and process development with KFUPM.
