MPU Fluid Technology is ontstaan vanuit Marine Power Drechtsteden (MPD/MPD Fluid Technology); een vertrouwde naam in de maritieme sector.
Binnen MPD is in de loop der jaren een schat aan ervaring opgedaan met het installeren van nieuwe motoren en het uitvoeren van reparaties aan koelingsmotoren. Cummins, één van de grootste producenten van dieselmotoren, zag op het gebied van technische knowhow MPD voor vol aan. De motorfabrikant bedrijf schoof MPD naar voren toen bleek dat er meer research nodig was omtrent smeer- en koelmiddelen. Dit resulteerde in drie jaar praktijkonderzoek, dat gebundeld werd in een nieuw bedrijf: MPU Fluid Technology.
