This is an initiative by Commons Agencies and Partners aiming at promoting the welfare, relationships, quality of work and competencies of construction workers- Fundi wa Mjengo. The initiative will also provide a platform where developers and contractors can find tried, tested and approved workers for their building projects. The construction workers targeted include Masons, Plumbers, Electricians, Painters, Tilers, Glassworkers, Roofers, Carpenters and Welders.
Mtaalamu intends to intervene by addressing the obvious challenges known to affect most Fundi wa Mjengo. They include:
• Lack of organization or institutional framework among them to address their needs
• Low levels of education and lack of certification for the profession
• Lack of continual on-job training opportunities
• Low start-up capital
• Poor exposure to new building technologies
• Lack of professional approach and outlook to work
• Irregular work opportunities
• Lack of necessary tools to produce excellent finishing
• Ignorance of health and safety requirements for construction workers
